I have acquired a pod in a game of chance...
err. Yeah, Pthug gave me his account, I reactivated it. I would be OK with learning how to play a holy pally and making Pthug my main raid character. I know we're in dire need of heals, and we really need another pally, which is why I'm making this offer. I will go with the general consensus of anyone who is officer or above and who is engaged to another officer.

play in the way you enjoy most. you can try to do what you think is best for the guild but if you aren't having fun, you're just screwing yourself.
some other things to consider:
- what if you suck at it? you can't be guaranteed a raid spot!
- it takes time to gear up (not as much as it used to, but still)
- the roster of people showing up to raid changes, and we may end up with too many of X at some point (usually more of an issue at beginning of expansions)
- the roster of people showing up to raid changes, and we don't have anyone bringing buff Y that you currently bring (for example, if both alex and i were healing, we don't have 3% hit anymore) _________________ ... in bed!

TBH, when I joined Eve at the beginning of Wrath, I transferred over my priest instead of my mage because I was worried about not getting a raid spot. It turns out that it is real bloody difficult to change your main, I assume because of past altercations.
Anyway, you should listen to Ben and play what you like best. I have enjoyed playing my priest, but I'm getting a little tired of it and Cataclysm will definitely be the AGE OF PEW PEW LAZERRRRZ.

Ok kinda touchy subject so apologies if I'm overly longwinded here.
First of all, our foremost concern with raid comp right now is that empty spots are baddies. Switching toons doesn't help that. If we were consistently filling raids with unworkable comps (too few/too many healers) then we'd need to look at changing some roles. That's not the situation we're in.
Second, you may or may not have noticed an overwhelmingly negative vibe coming from officers regarding having alts in raids or switching mains. This mostly comes from some negative experiences we had in TBC where we allowed some people to switch characters for certain content. That quickly went down a slippery slide out of control and we had to reel things in and decree "No alts in raids, EVARRR!!!!". Now sometimes an alt is more beneficial to the raid than the main would be, for example if we're short on healers and some dps happens to have another healer toon. If the raid can't continue otherwise and we have no other options, in this case we'll sometimes ask for an alt. But this is a last resort and something we'll avoid if at all possible. Once people see that getting their alt into raids is a possibility they'll start to "notice" things like "I think that my alt is actually better for this fight than my main. oh and he happens to drop something my alt needs as a total coincidence". Even if the person has the raids best interest in mind and isn't trying to be greedy, there's a bias there.
This is why we really love hybrids. They give us the best of both worlds.
In this particular case, your paladin isn't as geared as your mage, and (presumably) you're not as good at playing on your paladin as on your mage. I don't see this as a beneficial switch.
But of course you're the one who decides what character you will play. Just know that if you want to raid with us on a different toon, we treat that like a brand new application, and we judge it by the same standards as any other application in terms of gear, skill at playing that class, etc.

I think I'll just stick with lighting things on fire then.
